The European Union Commission on the 9th of December 2008 released the Commission’s decision denying Nigeria’s application to be granted the enhanced Generalise System of Preferences otherwise known as the GSP+ status (under the special incentive arrangement for sustainable development and good governance) for the 2009-2011 period.

The West African region has been locked in preparations for trade and integration under the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS), a Protocol signed since 1975. Unfortunately, old as the integration mechanism is, it has not yielded the desired objective.

The just concluded meeting of the West African Ministers of Trade and Finance (Ministerial Monitoring Committee – MMC) held in Banjul – The Gambia, has finally resolved that the 5th tariff band request made by Nigeria on the ECOWAS Common External Tariff (CET) is after all a great vision for the countries in West Africa.
